Terroir

Soil's signature taste

Terroir is the complete natural environment in which a wine, coffee, or other agricultural product is produced—the soil, climate, topography, and local traditions that give it distinctive character.

Originally French, the term implies that place matters: The terroir of Burgundy produces wines you can't replicate elsewhere.

The concept has expanded beyond wine to describe any product shaped by its origins: The terroir of Vermont maple syrup.
