Taranto

Italy's instep port

Taranto is a port city in southern Italy, situated on the heel of the Italian boot along the Ionian Sea.

It serves as a major naval base and industrial center.

The city lends its name to the tarantella dance and, through folk etymology, to the tarantula spider—both supposedly connected to the frenzied movements caused by spider bites in the region.
