Supreme Soviet
USSR's governing body
The Supreme Soviet was the highest legislative body in the Soviet Union and other communist states, nominally holding supreme governmental authority.
In practice, real power lay with the Communist Party leadership, making the Supreme Soviet largely a rubber-stamp parliament that ratified decisions already made elsewhere.
The Supreme Soviet unanimously approved the new five-year plan.
