open prisons
Low-restriction detention centers
Open prisons are correctional facilities with minimal security where inmates live under fewer restrictions than in conventional prisons.
Prisoners may leave during the day for work or education, returning at night.
The model emphasizes rehabilitation and reintegration rather than punishment: She spent her final months at an open prison before release.
Also called minimum-security prisons.
