South Boston

Massachusetts Irish enclave

South Boston is a neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts, historically known for its tight-knit Irish-American working-class community.

Often called "Southie," it became synonymous with insular ethnic pride, local loyalty, and—during the 1970s busing crisis—violent resistance to school desegregation.

Gentrification has transformed much of the area since the 2000s, though its cultural reputation persists in film and popular memory: Good Will Hunting, The Departed.
