Runestones

Ancient inscribed rocks

Runestones are large stones inscribed with runic alphabets, erected in Scandinavia during the Viking Age and earlier.

Most commemorate the dead or mark territory, though some record events or boast of deeds: The runestone was raised in memory of a fallen warrior.

The term also applies to smaller stones inscribed with runes for divination or magical purposes.
