balcony scene
Romantic elevated exchange
The balcony scene is the famous passage in Shakespeare's *Romeo and Juliet* where Romeo, standing in the Capulet garden, overhears Juliet on her balcony declaring her love for him.
It contains some of the most quoted lines in English literature: Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
By extension, any romantic exchange between lovers separated by height or distance—one calling up to another at a window—evokes the balcony scene.
