crown colony
British-ruled dependency
A crown colony is a territory under direct rule by the British Crown, administered by a governor appointed by the monarch rather than through local self-government.
The term is largely historical, describing the administrative status of British imperial possessions before independence or transition to other arrangements: Hong Kong was a crown colony until 1997.
