Pondicherry

French colonial enclave

Pondicherry is a coastal city in southeastern India, formerly a French colonial territory until 1954.

The French influence remains visible in its architecture, street names, and cuisine.

Now officially called Puducherry, it functions as a union territory rather than a state.

The city is known for the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the experimental township Auroville nearby.
