Pillars of Creation
Eagle Nebula's fingers
The Pillars of Creation are towering columns of interstellar gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula, made famous by a 1995 Hubble Space Telescope photograph.
The image shows three finger-like structures where new stars are forming, backlit by bright young stars.
The name evokes both their monumental appearance and their role as stellar nurseries: The Pillars of Creation became one of astronomy's most iconic images.
