Pernod
French licorice liqueur
Pernod is a French anise-flavored liqueur, pale yellow-green in color, that turns cloudy when mixed with water.
It emerged as a popular substitute after absinthe was banned in many countries in the early twentieth century, sharing absinthe's licorice taste but lacking the wormwood.
The name comes from the company that produces it.
She ordered a Pernod and water at the café.
