Panther
Athletic squad name
Panther most often refers to the Black Panther Party, a revolutionary Black nationalist organization founded in 1966 that advocated armed self-defense against police brutality and ran community programs.
A Panther was a party member.
The term also appears in sports team names and as the Marvel Comics superhero Black Panther, king of the fictional African nation Wakanda.
The Panthers patrolled Oakland neighborhoods in the late 1960s. (Lowercase panther is a large wild cat.)
