Black Panther Party
Sixties militant group
The Black Panther Party was a revolutionary Black nationalist organization founded in Oakland, California in 1966 by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale.
Originally called the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, the group advocated armed resistance to police brutality, community self-determination, and socialist politics.
The Panthers became known for their militant style, including black berets and leather jackets, and for community programs like free breakfast for children.
The FBI targeted the organization through COINTELPRO, and internal conflicts and government pressure led to its decline by the early 1980s.
