Newton's cradle

Clicking desk toy

Newton's cradle is a desktop toy demonstrating conservation of momentum and energy.

Metal balls hang in a row from a frame; when one end ball is lifted and released, it strikes the others and the ball at the opposite end swings out, while the middle balls remain nearly still.

The device is named for physicist Isaac Newton, though he didn't invent it.

The Newton's cradle on his desk clicked rhythmically.
