Mau Mau Uprising
Colonial Kenya revolt
The Mau Mau Uprising was an armed rebellion in Kenya from 1952 to 1960, primarily by the Kikuyu people against British colonial rule.
The insurgency sought land rights and independence, prompting Britain to declare a state of emergency and conduct brutal counterinsurgency operations including detention camps.
Though militarily suppressed, the uprising hastened Kenyan independence in 1963.
Her grandfather had been detained during the Mau Mau Uprising.
