Home Guard
Volunteer domestic militia
The Home Guard was Britain's civilian defense force during World War II, formed in 1940 when German invasion seemed imminent.
Composed largely of men too old or young for regular service, it eventually numbered over a million volunteers.
The force is affectionately remembered through the sitcom "Dad's Army": My grandfather served in the Home Guard. (Lowercase home guard is any local defense force.)
