Marseillaise

France's national song

The Marseillaise is the French national anthem, composed in 1792 during the French Revolution.

Originally a war song, it takes its name from revolutionary volunteers from Marseille who popularized it while marching to Paris.

The rousing melody and militant lyrics about rising against tyranny have made it a symbol of revolutionary spirit beyond France: The crowd broke into the Marseillaise.
