Magellanic

Southern sky clouds

Magellanic describes things associated with Ferdinand Magellan, the Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe in the early 16th century.

The term appears most commonly in astronomical contexts: the Magellanic Clouds are two dwarf galaxies visible from the Southern Hemisphere, and the Magellanic Stream is a ribbon of gas extending from them.

The Large Magellanic Cloud is one of the closest galaxies to our own.
