non-status

Lacking official recognition

Non-status describes Indigenous people in Canada who are not officially recognized under the Indian Act, typically because they or their ancestors lost status through marriage, enfranchisement, or administrative exclusion.

A non-status Indian may have Indigenous ancestry and cultural ties but lacks the legal rights and benefits that come with registered status: Many non-status Indians were cut off from their communities for generations.
