Limelight

Center of attention

Limelight originally referred to an intense white light produced by heating lime, used to illuminate theater stages in the 19th century.

The term now means the focus of public attention: She's been in the limelight since her debut album.

To steal the limelight is to divert attention to oneself, often from someone more deserving.
