gas lamp

Victorian street illumination

A gas lamp is a lamp that burns gas—typically natural gas or coal gas—to produce light.

Before electric lighting became widespread in the early twentieth century, gas lamps illuminated streets, homes, and public buildings.

Some cities preserve gas lamps in historic districts for their warm, flickering ambiance: The old quarter still has working gas lamps along its cobblestone streets.
