Lady Jane Grey
England's briefest queen
Lady Jane Grey was an English noblewoman who reigned as queen for nine days in 1553 before being deposed and later executed.
A great-granddaughter of Henry VII, she was placed on the throne by Protestant nobles hoping to prevent the Catholic Mary I from succeeding Edward VI.
Her brief, tragic reign makes her a symbol of political manipulation and innocent victimhood: the nine-day queen.
