Catholic martyr

Killed for belief

A Catholic martyr is someone killed for refusing to renounce the Catholic faith or for defending Catholic doctrine.

The Church formally recognizes martyrs through canonization, often as saints: Joan of Arc is among the most famous Catholic martyrs.

The term applies both to early Christians executed by Rome and to those killed during later religious persecutions.
