Knickerbocker

Dutch New Yorker

Knickerbocker originally referred to a descendant of the original Dutch settlers of New York, from a fictional historian in Washington Irving's satirical history of the city.

The term became synonymous with New Yorkers generally, especially old-money families.

The New York Knicks basketball team takes its name from this word.

Knickerbockers are also loose-fitting trousers gathered at the knee, the style associated with traditional Dutch dress.
