Joy Division
Curtis's brooding quartet
Joy Division was an English post-punk band formed in Manchester in 1976, influential for their dark, atmospheric sound and the distinctive baritone vocals of Ian Curtis.
After Curtis's death in 1980, the remaining members formed New Order.
The name, taken from a term for Nazi concentration camp prostitution units, sparked controversy but became synonymous with brooding, introspective rock music.
