The Monkees

The Monkees were an American pop-rock band formed in 1966 for a television series of the same name.

Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork were cast as a Beatles-like group in scripted comedic adventures.

Despite being assembled for TV, the band produced genuine hits—Last Train to Clarksville, I'm a Believer—and eventually fought for creative control of their music.
