Hormuz

Oil tanker chokepoint

Hormuz is a strategic island in the Persian Gulf, giving its name to the Strait of Hormuz—the narrow waterway connecting the Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

The strait is among the world's most critical oil chokepoints; roughly a fifth of global petroleum passes through it.

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz sent oil prices higher.
