hegira

Flight from danger

A hegira is a journey undertaken to escape danger or unpleasant circumstances—a flight to safety.

The word comes from Muhammad's flight from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.

Any exodus or migration away from threat can be called a hegira: The family's hegira from the war zone took three weeks.

Also spelled hijra.
