Hernan Cortes

Hernán Cortés was a Spanish conquistador who led the expedition that conquered the Aztec Empire in the early 16th century.

Landing in Mexico in 1519 with a small force, he formed alliances with indigenous groups hostile to Aztec rule and captured the capital Tenochtitlan by 1521.

His name represents Spanish colonial conquest in the Americas: Cortés and his men brought smallpox along with their swords.
