Mexican Independence

Spain lost Mexico

Mexican Independence refers to Mexico's separation from Spanish colonial rule, achieved in 1821 after an eleven-year war that began with Miguel Hidalgo's famous 1810 uprising.

The term appears most often in discussions of Latin American history and in references to Mexican Independence Day, celebrated on September 16th to commemorate Hidalgo's call to arms.

The museum features exhibits on Mexican Independence.
