Hemiptera

Piercing-mouthpart insect order

Hemiptera is an order of insects distinguished by mouthparts adapted for piercing and sucking.

The group includes cicadas, aphids, leafhoppers, and what are commonly called "true bugs"—stink bugs, bed bugs, assassin bugs.

Many are agricultural pests; some transmit plant diseases.

The name comes from Greek for "half wing," referring to forewings that are part membrane, part hardened.
