diapause

Bug development pause

Diapause is a state of suspended development in insects and other invertebrates, triggered by environmental conditions like cold or drought.

Unlike hibernation, which is a response to immediate conditions, diapause is programmed in advance—an insect may enter diapause while conditions are still favorable, anticipating harsh times ahead.

The eggs remain in diapause through winter.
