German shepherd

Bavaria's flock tender

A German shepherd is a large, intelligent breed of dog developed in Germany in the late 19th century for herding sheep.

The breed is known for its loyalty, trainability, and versatility—widely used in police work, military service, search and rescue, and as guide dogs.

German shepherds have a distinctive appearance: erect ears, a long muzzle, and typically a black-and-tan coat.

Their German shepherd barked at every delivery truck.

Also called German shepherd dog or, in British usage, Alsatian.
