mastiff

Massive protective hound

A mastiff is a large, powerful breed of dog with a broad head, short muzzle, and heavy build.

Mastiffs were historically used as guard dogs and for hunting large game.

The term covers several related breeds—English mastiff, bullmastiff, Neapolitan mastiff—all sharing the characteristic massive frame and protective temperament: The mastiff stood watch at the gate.
