Generation Y

Born eighties, nineties

Generation Y is the cohort born roughly between 1981 and 1996, following Generation X and preceding Generation Z.

More commonly called millennials, this generation came of age during the rise of the internet and social media.

The term sees more use in marketing and demographic research than in casual conversation: Generation Y consumers prefer experiences over possessions.
