Fukushima disaster
Japanese reactor crisis
The Fukushima disaster was a 2011 nuclear accident at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi power plant, triggered when a massive earthquake and tsunami disabled cooling systems, causing three reactors to melt down.
The worst nuclear incident since Chernobyl, it prompted mass evacuations, contaminated land and water, and reshaped global debate on nuclear energy: Germany accelerated its nuclear phaseout after Fukushima.
