French occupation
Wartime Vichy era
French occupation refers to periods when France controlled foreign territory through military force or political dominance.
The term most often applies to Napoleon's control of European nations in the early 1800s or to France's colonial presence in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Caribbean: Vietnam was under French occupation for nearly a century.
It can also mean the German occupation of France during World War II, though that's usually called "the Occupation" by the French themselves.
