Fibonacci numbers

Golden ratio relatives

Fibonacci numbers are a sequence where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, and so on.

The sequence appears throughout mathematics and nature—in spiral patterns of shells and sunflowers, branching of trees, arrangement of leaves.

Named after the Italian mathematician who introduced the sequence to Western mathematics in 1202.

The Fibonacci numbers show up everywhere once you start looking for them.
