square numbers

Multiplied by themselves

Square numbers are integers that result from multiplying a whole number by itself: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, and so on.

The term comes from geometry—a square with sides of length 3 has an area of 9 square units.

The first ten square numbers are easy to memorize.

Also called perfect squares.
