Fenians

Irish nationalist brotherhood

Fenians were members of a 19th-century Irish republican organization dedicated to ending British rule in Ireland through armed rebellion.

The name comes from the Fianna, legendary Irish warriors.

In modern use, particularly in Britain and Northern Ireland, Fenian functions as a sectarian slur against Irish Catholics or Catholic nationalists: graffiti reading "Fenian scum".

The term remains deeply offensive in these contexts.
