Eskimo roll

Capsized kayak righting

An Eskimo roll is a kayaking maneuver for righting a capsized boat while remaining seated.

The paddler uses a combination of hip rotation and paddle sweep to flip the kayak upright without exiting: She practiced her Eskimo roll until she could recover in seconds.

The term is considered dated; many paddlers now say simply roll or kayak roll.
