Entente Cordiale
Channel-spanning friendship
Entente Cordiale is French for "cordial understanding," referring specifically to the 1904 agreement between Britain and France that resolved colonial disputes and established diplomatic cooperation.
The term now describes any friendly understanding between nations or groups that stops short of a formal alliance: The two departments maintained an entente cordiale, cooperating without merging.
