Edgar Degas

French ballet artist

Edgar Degas was a French painter and sculptor of the late nineteenth century, associated with the Impressionists though he preferred "Realist." He is best known for his paintings of ballet dancers, often depicting rehearsals and performances from unexpected angles.

His work emphasized movement, modern life, and the human figure: The museum's Degas collection draws crowds every weekend.
