Proust

Memory's French chronicler

Marcel Proust was a French novelist (1871–1922) whose seven-volume *In Search of Lost Time* is among the most influential works of modern literature.

His name has become an adjective: Proustian describes elaborate, introspective prose, involuntary memory, or minute examination of consciousness and time.

A Proustian moment is a sensory experience that triggers vivid recall of the past—most famously, a madeleine dipped in tea.
