ECT
Psychiatric shock treatment
ECT stands for electroconvulsive therapy, a psychiatric treatment in which electric currents are passed through the brain to trigger brief seizures.
Once called electroshock therapy and associated with brutal depictions in films, modern ECT is administered under anesthesia and remains effective for severe depression that hasn't responded to other treatments: Her doctor recommended ECT after medications failed.
