Dow Jones Industrial Average
Wall Street barometer
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is a stock market index that tracks thirty major American companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ.
Created in 1896 by Charles Dow and Edward Jones, it remains one of the most widely cited indicators of the overall health of the U.S. stock market, though critics note that thirty companies cannot truly represent the entire economy.
Often shortened to the Dow, it appears constantly in financial news: The Dow dropped 500 points on recession fears.
