market index
Exchange performance tracker
A market index is a statistical measure tracking the performance of a group of securities—stocks, bonds, or other assets.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 are prominent examples, each measuring different slices of the stock market.
Investors use indexes to gauge overall market health and as benchmarks for portfolio performance: The fund consistently outperformed the market index.
