dixieland band

New Orleans group

A dixieland band plays the early jazz style that originated in New Orleans in the early twentieth century, characterized by collective improvisation, a front line of trumpet, clarinet, and trombone, and a rhythm section of piano, banjo, tuba or bass, and drums.

The music is upbeat and syncopated, often heard at parades, funerals, and festivals: The dixieland band struck up "When the Saints Go Marching In".
