Dixie region
Below Mason-Dixon line
The Dixie region refers to the American South, particularly the states that formed the Confederacy during the Civil War.
The term comes from "Dixie," a nickname for the South popularized by the 1859 minstrel song.
Today Dixie appears in place names, business names, and cultural references throughout the region: Dixie Highway, Winn-Dixie.
The word carries nostalgic connotations for some and uncomfortable associations with slavery and segregation for others.
