Deepwater

Offshore drilling catastrophe

Deepwater describes water deep enough for large vessels to navigate, or activities occurring in deep ocean waters.

A deepwater port can accommodate ships with significant draft.

Deepwater drilling extracts oil or gas from the ocean floor far below the surface, often miles down.

The term also appears in the name of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, an offshore drilling rig explosion that caused a massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
